泰戈尔出生于孟加拉。泰老的著作最初都是用孟加拉文写的。然而他的诗是在他自己把它们译成泰戈尔英文散文诗之后才获得了世界性的赞扬。泰戈尔英文散文诗大致有： Gardener《园丁集》 Jitanjali《吉檀枷利》 Crescent Moon《新月集》Fruit-gathering《采果集》Stray Bird《飞鸟集》Lover’s Gift and Crossing 《爱者之赠与歧路》。而用孟加拉文写的则还有很多。而英文诗只是选了其中的一小部而已。例如《飞鸟集》就大部来自Kanika。
